Anyone for Thanksgiving Turkey?

November 20, 2009 4:02 PM

Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the harvest and generally express gratitude! It's celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the US, and so in 2009, Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Nov 26th.

It's a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family, eating great food and feeling grateful together for all the good things in life.

Perhaps you'd like to invite some friends over for a slap-up Thanksgiving meal here on SmallWorlds? Well to help you get into the swing of things, we've got two Thanksgiving items available in Ace's Appliances that will give your Thanksgiving table a truly authentic feel.

Corn 'n' Turkey!

Corn has always been a potent harvest symbol, and so we've got a golden ear of corn for you - don't forget to add lots of yummy butter - mmmmmm! You could stock up on a few ears and give them out as Thanksgiving gifts. The other item is what no Thanksgiving table would be complete without - it's a delicious Roast Turkey with all the trimmings.

A Short Thanksgiving History Lesson

Though many competing claims exist, the most familiar story of the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, in present-day Massachusetts, in 1621. More than 200 years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941.
If you'd like to know more about Thanksgiving, and even read more about just what was on the menu for that first Thanksgiving meal, check out this site for some interesting facts.

What are you Thankful for?

Thanksgiving is the time to feel gratitude for all the good things in life. It is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of fellow men and women. There are times when life can be very trying... so, for just a few minutes on Thanksgiving Day, try to step outside the demands of daily life and just "be". Find something, no matter how small, to be thankful for because in giving thanks you truly lighten your load, even if for only a moment.

"Who does not thank for little will not thank for much" ~ Estonian proverb
Here's a short poll for you... it's to encourage you to take a moment to be thankful. You can choose as many items as you like, as well as adding in your own answer. It is of course somewhat 'light' but it has a deeper purpose, and we hope it encourages you to think about the real things you have in your own life for which you can feel a deeper sense of gratitude.
Happy Thanksgiving to all SmallWorlds citizens!
