New problem with Host Hunt you should be aware of
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:27 AM »

OK...anyone see a problem with these 2 pictures?  Anyone?  :??:

These screenshots were taken during both host games yesterday.  The top one is from the afternoon game with Dragon, the bottom is from the evening game.  Notice how the computer was automagically selecting the SECOND person who said the correct line...instead of the first?

There was yet a third time I noticed the software making a mistake last night.  During a different round, someone said "I found HOST_Dragon/" (note the extra ' / ' on the end of the line?), and the line appeared on the screen above the winner!  Obviously, the line shouldn't have appeared at all (only one person is able to say the correct line during each round...and this line should not have even WORKED).

Made a call to Gail last night and she said that Dragon had a brownout in the morning game.  I said that it also happened in the evening game as well.  Not really a solid answer to the second statement, but was told to forward the screenshots to their email address.

So:  be very alert when you play the host game for the time being.  If you should have won and you see a bubble showing you said it correctly...yet another person was selected as the winner instead...TAKE A SCREEN SHOT OF IT IMMEDIATELY (if you don't know how to take a screenshot, now is a good time to learn ;) ).  Report the problem using the help button as soon as possible.  Send the screenshot as an attachment to support@virtualfamilykingdom.com , along with an explanation.

Not sure that I convinced Gail, but I feel that there is a problem with the software they use to detect the winner during the host hunt.  This is the first time I've ever seen this happen, so I'm wondering if it's just Dragons software that is messed up.  Hopefully they will get it straightened out.

OK, that's really strange.  I didn't think you could even say "I found HOST_Dragon" if you weren't the first person.  Have they changed this?  I know I've been in the same room before when Harmony or Dragon have walked in, and because I wasn't first, my speech bubble NEVER appeared on the screen at all; only the blue winner's bubble appeared.  Figured that's how the computer program worked.

But arg, Flame, since you blacked out the ppl's bubbles (ok I have to ask WHY?  I see some of you do this regularly...), did you happen to win in either of those instances???   :??:

Yes, Pink:  only the winning person is supposed to be able to say the correct line.  Not so last night.

Blacked out bubbles:  I do it for 2 reasons:

1)  some people are privacy freaks, and I didn't ask anyone in those pics whether they minded me posting their pics (just a courtesy thing that Flame and others do).  Sometimes I will not black out the bubbles if it's during a public function like a birthday party or a ballroom dance.  However, the main reason I did it in this situation is because of the following reason:

2)  I keep the majority of my clones private (yes...I do have more than 1 clone :) ).  I reveal them to nobody except Flamanette.  Yes there is a reason for that :)

...and I won one of those rounds and lost the other.  Blech.

Uh oh...  I'd better be on my best behavior from now on and behave myself for I never know when "Flame" might be in the same room, lol.

Congrats on the win!   :clapping:

Well, it would be funny to report him.

- report -

Hi Staff, there is a beady eyed stranger staring at me at the crossroads. He's been there for at least a full hour! Staring!

- several minutes later-

Oh good! Staff got him! Take that little beady-eyed man!

Pink, there are other times that here at noBS, we would require you to black out the titles - if you felt a need to complain about someone and you have a screenprint.
  -  if the person is a noBS member, you need to take it up with that person via PM - NOT on the forum.
  -  if the person is not a member here, then they have no way of defending themselves.  {You are allowed to say you would tell anyone who it was VIA PM ONLY, if someone is interested.)

These two rules also apply even if you don't have a screenprint, but wish to express a concern.  ;)

Thanks for sharing that info, Duck.i!  -files away in pea-sized brain for future application-  Didn't know that!

Usually, Flame errs on the side of caution.  If I'm not sure, I'll either bip a mod/admin...or I make it black!

Yet again, this bug in Dragons software raises its ugly head.  See below for a screenshot of another round during todays host hunt.  Again, the second person who said the line correctly won. :hmm:

Keep a sharp eye out people!!  This is getting ridiculous.

Thanks for the suggestions, Pink and Paws!  I tried Tinypic right now, and it's working well.  I'll check out Flickr, too. :)

Here's another 'weirdness' that happened during today's host hunt:

Notice how the first person definitely was the loser because they did not capitalize the word 'HOST'.  HOWEVER:  they should NOT have been able to say 'host_Dragon' at all...regardless!!  Only the winner in the room is supposed to be able to say the hosts title!  Lovin' it!  :sur:

Lol!  Lots of luck...and Flamanette playing on our other computer at the same time helps, too ;)

Need more views of odd behaving host software?  Here is yet another from the nighttime host hunt from the other night with Dragon:

Notice that a player was still able to say "I found HOST_Dragon"...even with the extra ' \ ' at the end of the line!  Should not have happened.  Again, only the winner can say the host title during the host hunt.  Sigh... :td:

More fun and pictures from todays fiasco.  Enjoy the following:

Notice how the first line appears to be said correctly (and was allowed to be said)...yet the second line was said INCORRECTLY (the word HOST was not capitalized...neither was the first letter of Dragon)...and that person won... :hmm:

Soon, you'll be able to just talk about the weather and win... :hmm:

Not to disappoint, here's yet another picture from today of buggy Host software....this time on the Medieval map while our boy was flying through:

He was the first to say it...THREE TIMES!  Notice how he was able to keep saying it over and over.  Then Dragon said "no, you have to say it right!".  He typed it again!  Then everyone on the map started saying it...?   So much for only the winner being able to say the winning line.  She ended up giving the prize to someone else who came onto the map and said it after our boy.

Flamanar...stepping away from the laptop...

FYI:  I WILL say that any hunt that we have not rightfully been awarded a prize, we have disputed and sent all the screenshots (obviously with more detail) that I've been posting here.  VFK has come through every time and awarded us the prize we earned.  It's maddening to have to CYA all the time, though... :(

FYI#2:  Please also note that the screenshots I'm posting are not necessarily Flame family wins.  They are pics of this situation...whether we won or lost that round.  Hope that clears things up in that we are concerned for everyones benefit...not just our own.  We have also fought to help what SHOULD have been the rightful winner receive their award by sending our own help reports and pics to back up their claim to the prize.  :)

More fun and pictures from todays fiasco.  Enjoy the following:

I am actually seeing a error on the first person's saying. Notice that the I found HOST_Dragon, although correctly said, has an extra space between found and HOST, while the second person, though not in capital letters has the space apart each word correctly.

For the second mishap... um, clueless on what happened there. He was saying it correctly. So... :wtf:

Right.  My point in the first pic I posted today was that a person was selected as the winner by the host computer...even when saying the phrase COMPLETELY wrong:

"I found host_dragon"

instead of:

"I found HOST_Dragon"

Also:  if only the winner is allowed to say "host_dragon" AT ALL, then the first person...no matter how many spaces before the HOST_Dragon part...should not have been able to say the hosts title...at all.  That first line should have never appeared on the screen.

The second pic concerning the map:  yeah...he won by a long shot.  LOL

At least people are able to find hosts. I think they need to rethink some think for when people actually find them though, and maybe actually have a popup in game to say when it started or ended.

I found Dragon, but after the hunt had apparently already ended.

I have remained pretty quiet on this entire Host Hunt situation.  Although I play SW a lot more then VFK, the host hunt is one of the many reasons for it. Recent reactions to the host hunt have caused me to finally share my opinion on the host hunts, VFK in general, and how I handle the frustrations related to them.

Host Hunts:
Even when I see an announcement on these boards for a host hunt, I usually stay clear.

Some of you may think I am crazy.  Who would run from an announced host hunt?  Well friends, those host hunts remind me too much of Dreams Month in VMK.  During dreams month I saw far too many friends waiting around for hours on end, day after day, only to be disappointed time and time again.  There was so much hurt and tears as a result of dreams month. There was my niece who just didn't understand the concept.  A very good friend that signed in for EVERY EVENT, the entire month only to be disappointed time and time again.  (Don't ask her how many times she won.  It is not a pretty conversation.)

I see the VFK host hunts as similar--but WORSE on one regard. The good thing is in the VFK version players can not go AFK.  The bad thing is in the VMK version each player in the room was awarded a prize.

My Host Hunt suggestion to VFK is as follows:
Why not award a prize to the first 5 or first 10 players that say the phrase?
If the game is supposed to be all about kids and fun, why be so tight on the prizes?

So thats my 2 cents on Host Hunts...and how I would remedy the situation.

Emailing and Telephoning VFK (rant):

For those of you that call VFK, I give you a lot of credit.  My experience in calling and emailing VFK in the past was less then satisfactory.  Those that have been on these boards a long time know that early on I detected a few errors on the images in AWA. Since the game is somewhat educations based, I wrote VFK several times. One day I received a reply. The reply stated the fix was done.  It was not.  Eventually, I was on the phone with them for something else.   The time of the phone call was shortly after the Fireworks Game was released.

I spoke with 3 people.  I spent well over an hour on the phone with a developer discussing that and other things.  I was assured it would be fixed and soon. Not.  It is not rocket science to edit text on an image.  Just a few months ago did I track Vintage down in game to get it resolved.  This was after I brought up the issue AGAIN. It is my understanding the images had been changed just not installed.

I'd talk to Vintage in game about an issue in game, rather than call or email.  In my eyes she seems to actually gets things done.  (Cheers Vintage.  :2thunbs: )  Also  I would work more to change the process, a long term solution rather than to get the prize earned. In the end the long term solution would help many and reduce frustration.

Other public announcements from VFK:

I take them with a grain of salt.

During the telephone conversation mentioned above, again shortly after Fireworks was released, I said--something similar to and when pirates comes out next players will be really excited.  I was told (and shared this with only a few friends) checkers would be the next player to player game.  So think back about any hype you saw for Pirates and a Market Trading Game releases --BEFORE checkers was released.   :notme:  From what I was told checkers was some how the background or technology for player verses player gaming.

So, for those of you that do call VFK, good luck.  Maybe they have changed.  However, the lack of a simple frequently updated schedule of events on the home page leads me to a more pessamistic view.

Okay so it is more like there is my dollar---not 2 cents. Until I see changes, I just stay back and try not to get to involved in the game.

Unfortunately players have little control as to what any of these games do or the changes they make.  In SW there was a recent change that I found quite upsetting. I posted on their official forum I a simple..."My avatar name (happy)  does not reflect my mood."  I logged out.  I did not sign in for a couple days.  If you are a dedicated player,  they will notice your absence.  If they really care, they may even contact you or publically ask all players how they would change things.

Happy steps off her soap box :sb: .

Hugs Happy

You're allowed to rant, no matter if you play SW more than VFK.   :)

I will say this.  I think VFK is trying, my opinion.  Look at how many Host Hunts there have been, even just announced on this Forum.  Look at how many times a particular Host Hunt prize is handed out.  Lately, it has NOT been a new prize at the beginning of the month.  VFK changes the prize whenever they feel like it.  Maybe they are looking at actually how many items are in circulation, and when they hit a mark, they change it?  idk

Therefore in my eyes, VFK is trying to not have so many "rare" things.  Therefore, allowing more players to enjoy them.  Whether by trading for them, or by winning the prizes themselves in the events.  I've traded for host prizes.  It's not difficult.  Some things I didn't have to give an arm and a leg for either.   ;)  I've gifted a fair share away too.  No reason for them to sit around and collect dust if I already have 1!  Some of these people have gadzillions of these prizes and just want something else they don't already have - so trade.

This goes for buyables too.  The only things they have really taken out of stores are Holiday stuff and Football stuff, I think?  In my opinion, that is to be expected.  And I think you can still buy St. Patty's and Easter stuff in the Gift Shop.  :lolg:    And of course Thanksgiving and Christmas outfits in Autumn Imports.  That again proves to me that VFK is trying.  No "rare".

Do I enjoy having to wait hours on end for a Host, only to end up not seeing one?  Nope.  I've done it, it sucks.  But, that's the name of the game.  You win some, you lose some.  In the end there are  A LOT of Host Hunt prizes out there.  So it's a choice I have to make on if I want to play the game or not.

I like both the teleporter games and the host hunt games.  Lag can sometimes get the best of me in teleporter games, and therefore I might not like them as much.  Sometimes there is no lag, and it goes smooth for me.  But then I also don't like having to wait around for hours for a Host to show up for a Hunt either.  Again, the name of the game.

Does it remind me of VMK Dreams Month?  Sometimes.  But, I do feel VFK is putting more of those prizes out in the game, and not reserving them only for a select few.   ;)

I don't know how awarding 5-10 players that say the phrase would work.  I would love it, but idk how it would work.  That was what VFK kinda had done, before this new software host thing.  It was the first player that said it.  But, it was quite difficult for the Host to try and manage.  Without going back and looking at chat logs, I honestly don't know how they could tell who said what first.  That would take A LOT of time.

Oh Happy,  I do believe that the Wren in AWA is finally fixed.   ;)    I played a game the other night, and I couldn't believe my eyes, but forgot to take a screen shot.

Communication is everything.  And that still lacks from VFK.  An official calendar would be wonderful.  Homepage announcements that did not change, or made sense sometimes, would be even better.

Another host hunt just ended...but not without the continuing problems.

Here is another pic showing a problem with the hunt.  This is from todays hunt.  The person on the right clearly said the correct line at least 3 seconds before the next person said the line (not shown in the pic because they said it so much later).  The second person won...and their text had the blue bubble:

Flamanar...and so it continues.

That is really really strange, Flame.  When I run into Dragon, I'm the first one to say it, and I've always had the blue bubble immediately.

I don't understand how it's happening with you so much, but not with me?   :??:

Pink, are you alone in the room? If so, then that is the reason why.

Pink, remember that the pics I'm posting are not all pics of me winning.  In some pics, I'm just flying through the room and happen to catch what just happened.  In some of the pics, it's not even me saying anything.  Lots of the pics I'm posting are pics of others who are saying it wrong yet got the prize, who said it right and didn't get the blue bubble, etc.  It's happening to others as well...as I've had to help a couple people get their award by also sending in a help report for them and a screen shot of them winning.  I'm not the only one seeing it.  This is also not limited to certain rooms...as the pics I'm posting are from all over the kingdom.

More proof from tonights host hunt with Dragon:

In the above pic, someone said the sentence with an extra space between the 'I' and 'found'.  The sentence appeared on screen...yet it's not supposed to.  Only the winner is supposed to be able to say the Hosts title when they are in the room...yet this happened tonight.

In the pic below, someone said the sentence wrong (notice the extra '!' at the end of the sentence)...yet still got the prize:

In the last pic from tonight, someone said the sentence right...but no blue bubble.  While Dragon was telling them to say it 'exactly' (O.o), they re-typed the sentence and said it again...exactly the same way as they did the first time.  The second time they said it, they had the blue bubble:

Again, all the pics I'm posting here have also been sent via email to VFK support...along with explanations of each pic.  I keep suggesting they stop the host hunts with Dragon until they get her shtuff straightened out (whatever the problem is)...yet she still has hunts.  Flame can only do so much.  This affects everyone.  As long as this continues, the host hunt is not being handled fairly.

Flamanar...no I didn't lose my cool today.  :)

ROFL.  Sounds like the same 2 that came into a room I was in tonight.  Following each other.  O tried to tell them how to say it.  One of them called her a liar.  LOL.  Nice...

ROFL!  I think the same thing when I see that!

I used to try helping people to say it right...but it takes at LEAST a couple rounds of explaining...and even then, either they don't get it, or they call you a liar.  The problem is that they ask us to 'show' them how to say it...but we can't.  As soon as we tell them we can't show them by typing it out for them, we're labeled.  :hmm: LOL.

It would be nice if VFK included in each 'blast' a line that says "you will only be able to say the correct line once the Host is actually in the same room as you are...otherwise, the text will show up red and will be unspeakable".  Of course, they'd have to READ the blasts to find that out...and I think most of them don't read them (I know I don't, lol).  Eventually they will learn...

Wise words, Pink.  As Flame has written:  "He who speaks during Host hunts...loses Host hunts".  Silence is golden in this case...no offense meant to Golden.  ;)  :lolg:

It's sad that it has to be like that, but it's true.   Watch and listen:  you have a chance at winning.  Talk and not pay attention:  chances are you're wasting your time even playing the game.

I remember winning in a room once last month, and one of the people who didn't win said (no lie): "That's not fair!  I was watching TV!".  Yup...there's always a few like that 'out there'... :hmm:

I am going to pass around a sign in sheet for Hero to do this "Host Hunt for Dummies" class!  And Pink, true confession here  :sur::  most likely one of those fairies you see over and over again flying through your room is.........dare I confess: our son!  :lolg:

While his method drives me insane, I am not allowed to say anything about it anymore, because his method has NEVER failed!!!  This kid has radar, honest to goodness!  Not only that, he LIVES for the challenge of getting to the "hint" places first!  He says:  because he has been flying around all over the kingdom, he can get there faster because the "room has already loaded several times for him and therefore loads faster".....hmmm sounds pretty techno geeky to me, but again:  it works!!!

Sigh.

Neither did I!  In fact, I was gonna tell him to stop flying all over the place (thinking it was a waste of time)...but he kept winning...sometimes a couple different times in one game!  At that point, I told him to do whatever works for him. lol. :laugh2:

Flamanar...thinking of retiring from hunting and just let Hero have at it... :heat:

Yeah....it continues.  Here's another clear pic from tonights hunt of how Dragons hunt is still broken.  First player said it correct...second player won:

Here's a pic of the staff announcement that talks about how you have to say the sentence EXACTLY:

...which amazes me since everyone has seen the pics I've been posting of people winning by saying the sentence INCORRECTLY.

Well....I was hoping that the big delay between the last host hunt and the hunt of last night was to fix the problems with Dragons software/computer/whatever.  I had mentioned in my last few reports about this to VFK that they should cease the hunts till they get the problem fixed.  My hopes were again dashed tonight.

Flying into a room tonight, I saw the following:

So the problem continues.  Reported it again.  Sent a pic to VFK via email again.  If I count how many screenshots I've sent them showing this problem so far...

On a funnier note, there is a new wave of 'weirdness' on VFK.  There are lots of people flying around the kingdom during the host hunts saying the following:

ROFL.  At least I got a good laugh out of it tonight ;)

LOL!  I saw someone say that too!  Gosh, I was laughing out loud.  Pretty funny!  They should win just for being original....

Ironically...with the problems that have plagued the Dragon host hunts, that sentence might be chosen as the winner... :lolp:

Well, another host hunt....and the problem still continues.  Not for a lack of reporting the problem, that's for sure.  Sent the following pics to VFK tonight (as complete screenshots, of course).  I was in a room tonight and only won after saying the correct sentence...twice.  Here we go:

Said it the first time:

The one pic I don't have is of Dragon asking me to type it again.  Type it again?  :??:

So I did:

Wow...I won the second time!

Yay for me, but I still had a question:

Obviously no time for questions...Dragon gotta run:

Hello?  Bueller?

So there you have it.  The problem is still not fixed.  I started posting/reporting about this on July 1.  Tonight I heard others talking about having the exact same problem with saying the correct sentence first, but not winning.  Stay tuned for the next host hunt.  Hopefully it won't be repeats... :uhuh:

You don't want to know how long it took me to get them to simply edit 2 or 3 typos on images in the AWA game. And that was images---not programming really stuff.  I'm sure Princess, Astro, PD and a few others can fill you in on that one.  Emails, calls, emails, emails, in game reports.  At one point fairly early on I even received a message it was fixed-NOT. (longer than 6 months...)  Poor wren...poor owl...

Looks like I might beat your record there, Happy.  At least at this rate.

Continued problems tonight during the host hunt.  People saying the correct line second winning.  People saying the line INCORRECTLY AND SECOND winning.  Too PO'd to even post pictures of it here for proof anymore.  Ridiculous.

Well...looks like VFK has fixed the problems.  Not one issue for me at all tonight.

.It did play the hunt this morning, and there were some problems.  But Age seemed to be following Dragon around during the hunt and fixing them (go AGE! :clapping: ).

So let's hope this thread dies a happy death.  LOL.
