Only 12 Days Until The Extraordinary Experiences Competition Closes!
March 19th, 2009 by Hilary Jackson
There are only 12 days OR 288 hours OR 17,280 minutes to go before the cut off time for the Extraordinary Experiences competition.

In fact, depending on just when it was that you actually began to read this article, you may have as little as 9375 minutes to go (or even less) before the closing of our very first competition. So, if you have yet to create something awesome for all SmallWorlds citizens to rate, there’s still time for you to get in with a chance to win.

What do I win?
The Extraordinary Experiences competition is a great opportunity for all mission-creators or space-decorators to strut their stuff and we’ve got some amazing prizes for the winners!

There are lots of ways to win a prize:

Create a top rated mission for the month of March. 103 prizes will be given away to the top-rated missions, including three iPod Touch devices!
Create a mission that uses great interactions to be in to win the Best Interaction Award
Create an interesting mission storyline to be in to win the Best Storyline Award
Create a fantastic space to be in to win the Best Dressed Room or Space Award

Prizes

Top Rated Mission Prize: iPod Touch 32GB
Second Highest Rated Mission Prize: iPod Touch 16GB
Third Highest Rated Prize: iPod Touch 8GB
100 “In the Top 100 Rated Missions” Prizes: 2000 SmallWorlds Gold
“Best Interaction Award”: USD$200 Amazon Gift Voucher
“Best Storyline Award”: USD$200 Amazon Gift Voucher
“Best Dressed Room or Space Award”: USD$200 Amazon Gift Voucher

To Enter
The competition began at 12:01:00 am. SWT (EST) on March 1, 2009 and its all over at 11:59:59 pm SWT (EST) on March 31, 2009… well, we like to be real exact and precise y’know. Winners will be announced on or before April 8th.

You enter the competition simply by creating a mission or space, which is then open for other players to rate (out of a possible 5 stars).  Stuff created before the commencement of the Competition Period are also eligible, but its only the ratings received in March 09 which are counted when determining the prize winners. All submissions will be reviewed for content and compliance with the Official Rules before being judged  - you can read the Official Rules here.

Creating Great Missions
We asked a question on the SW forums to find out just what you look for in great missions when you’re playing them.  So, if you want to create something really cool that will ensure you get the 100 ratings you need in March to qualify for the top-rated missions competition, here’s a few tips:

 Geno Lindley

“Hilary, the best missions for me are the ones that:
1. Make a serious attempt to decorate their spaces appropriately for the mission.
2. Ones that are different than just looking for things and emoting.
3. The tasks are ones in which you have to use a bit of thinking to figure out what is required…”

Smiles Arefree

“I think the best missions are the ones where people put effort into  making things consistent. For example:
- If someone makes a button orange, then all buttons in their mission should be orange rather than having a mix of orange and blue
- If someone makes a gate open when I have a key, then clicking on the gate without the key should show a message “the gate is locked”, rather than just doing nothing.  Just my two cents - Smiles”

Karly Kryptonite

“I think what makes a great mission is one that challenges the user to think, but still has fun.

It can’t be one put together in five minutes, but one that had time and thought put into it. It also helps if it pays well and give out good XP!”

Good Luck Everyone!
There seems to be some common themes… putting the time in to create something that’s both fun and interesting, paying attention to the little details, and good rewards for mission success!  With all that in mind, if you’ve yet to create an entry, there’s still time to win, and there are some GREAT prizes up for grabs!
