Title: 2/27 HOST Teleporter Event
Post by: Astro on February 27, 2010, 02:28 PM
There is a HOST Teleporter Event in progress right now.  Not sure how long it's been going on for, or for how much longer it might last??  It's on the Host Tab.  Winter Wishes Start Room is the room title.  Good Luck!

As you can see it's NOT listed on the Event Calendar.    :??:    WHY???

Bad form - not even placing it on the calendar. We would not have been home anyway, but why even have the calendar there? Congrats to everyone who got in! Prize still the Olympic Torch?

I just hopped on to do a puzzle and the Host room is up again. I imagine it has been up for a while, just trying to help out my NoBS peeps. Maybe there is a chance you can still get in???

Queue is messed up! IMO. I clicked right at the start of the pop up message and got in ... two and half hours later! I only put in 6 peeps in line, for extra chances to win for others.. um, one peep never even went through! And another, she crashed and they wanted a screen shot?!!? :madder:  >:[ >:[ :madder: :madder:  >:[

I liked the old version of the queue better, not the "OH pick my clone! please please!!!" The older version, at least you knew exactly where you were, you knew you had a chance to go into the rooms and organize the extras how you saw fit. this version, you must be on your toes... at all times because you never know when they will take you in, and seeing Age ready to boot... oh boy!

I did win some flames, phew! not as many as others have won, but I  don't mind not winning many anymore. The game is losing interest with me as so many items all over the place, you just get overwhelmed. Plus their constant changing of items without notice...

anyway, hope everyone here has a flame. If more teleport games come by, will try again to win spares.

Yeah.  It stinks.  No advance warning on the event calendar for EITHER game, and people on game after the initial blast were oblivious to both games.  Very uncool, IMHO.

The queue system:  sigh.  This new system is completely random.  You are never 'in' the queue until they let the next batch of players come in.  The computer then randomly picks from the players the computer has identified (queue checked) as being 'available' and randomly chooses the players who will be in the next queue.  So, yes.  You can have 4 players logged on, and it's very probable that your first person may never get in, your second and fourth players get in very soon, and your third player takes hours to get in.  Random.

The problem like Pix said is:  we don't know till almost the last minute that we're 'in' the queue, because the queue only goes out to ninth place.  So if you have to go to the little boys/girls room, or have a quick bite to eat, or get a phone call (you know...real life stuff), you very well may get pulled into the queue and the room and get booted...all before getting back!

Screen shots:  I'm not sure what they're thinking with that.  We had that same situation.  Someone was in the queue and crashed.  Help report was sent.  They asked for a screen shot?!  What the....  :??: I guess we could have sent them a pic of a black computer screen.  What an odd thing to request!  I've heard of others having the same experience.  They want screen shots.  OF WHAT?  LOL.

I've heard that if you DC while in the queue and log back in fast enough, your place in line is preserved.  Haven't tested that yet, but encouraging news.

I've seen people on other boards say things about the lack of notice, comparing this event to host hunts.  However, with host hunts, there are continuous blasts.  So no matter when you log in, you very quickly know there's a host hunt event going on.  Not so with yesterday events.  I feel sorry for the people who were bored and playing solitaire or something while the games were running all the while.

ETA:  I did think of an alternate and quicker solution to the current teleporter games.  Instead of having one room with 6 teleporters, and people jamming up at the entrance...and slowing down the queue by taking a long time to pick a teleporter, talk to the host, be AFK, etc...why not open 6 host rooms, each with a different teleporter ride?  The player selects the teleporter UP FRONT by selecting which room to go to.  When they enter the room they selected, they're automatically put on a ride and either win or lose.  Seems to me this would completely eliminate having to boot people from the entrance...after trying to divine whether they are AFK or not.  It would also free up people to be able to walk away from their computer for a brief bit and come back without fear of being pulled into a room, being judged AFK and booted.  Possibly less lag as well, eliminating people from DC'ing upon entering the game room who have not yet picked a teleporter.  I've seen hosts handle more than one ride room at a time, so this is a possibility.  Right now, it's a mess with the hosts being essentially 'cattle herders'.  Telling people to pick a porter, asking people if they are AFK, answering a bunch of questions, the list goes on.  Theoretically, it would make the queue/queues run like lightning.  And people could still talk to the host while on the ride if the host was in the room at the same time.  Right now the main thing slowing down the queue is a mass of people in the game room...all with different statuses/agendas.  Just a thought.

Yup, true.  Doesn't really matter if you log in fast enough or not, if you dc.  Whatever place you were in queue by "VFK standards" (when you dc, etc.), is where you will stay, once you refresh.  This I don't think has changed from very long ago with Host Room queues.  Which is nice.  Exception to this I assume, is if you were to be pulled into the Host room, at the exact moment that you dc.  Then your place is pretty much gone, since the system assumes you were on your way to the Host room, when and unfortunate dc happens.

It does seem like VFK is pulling players from all over the queue system.  So you do have to be on your toes, never knowing when you'll be pulled in.  Not a big fan of this either.  As much as I would hate to see 500+ people in front of me in line (and in order), at least I knew where I was, and could make a choice on whether or not I felt I would make it into an event or not.

- sigh - .... idk.  There are so many pros and cons of each Host event.  I will say that communication is everything, and that is the one thing that is still lacking from VFK obviously.  :(   What purpose does this Event Calendar have, if there is no advance notice, or events aren't even shown ON the calendar at all?
