Unicorn Plants can be picked in Fairy age rooms
6/20/15
Click on it like harvesting other plants, you get a popup : "Picking Unicorn Plant!
Please wait while the Unicorn Plant is picked! This will take about a minute!"
After a bit you get another popup: "Unicorn Plant!
You've got a Unicorn Plant!
This Unicorn Plant has been picked!"
Seems they show in your inventory as a plant.
Someone said you put them in your Unicorn room for Unicorn to eat - I don't know if that means they disappear or not at that time.
If you do NOT have a unicorn - I don't know if the plant stays in your room when you place it there or not.
update: according to another player, Mintie said more info on this to come later in week.

I was told that staff said you only need one per unicorn.
I happened to put two in my unicorn's room, and he ate both right away! Yes, I got a pig for a pet! :lolg:
However, they did not disappear, they remained as full plants.
(At the time, I did not understand how the unicorn fully worked, so it happens as I went to one of my garden rooms to water, he came with me. OMG, what a piggie! He tried the corn, moved on to eggplant, and stopped after trying the wheat. But he did get groggy I gather, as he proceeded to lay down, EACH TIME, in the aisle I was watering! :madder: I had to remember which plants he was laying on, walk away and "whistle" to get him up, so I could water them! Needless to say, I have learned my lesson on unicorn handling, so I will NOT be taking him to my gardens again! :lolp: )
