Title: Let's talk about Salads
Post by: Kat on May 10, 2008, 09:23 PM
So what is your favorite salad that you make at home?

Mine is romaine lettuce, purple cabbage, spinach, carrots, green onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, and water chestnuts and I will sometimes add turkey or chicken.  I almost always use ranch dressing, though I will sometimes mix salsa and sour cream together.

What about you?

MMM MMM

I don't really get excited about making salad at home, they are never the same as getting one out to dinner.   But I do make a mean Taco Salad:  Ground Turkey with Taco seasoning, Romaine lettuce mix with tortilla chips, grated cheese sour cream and taco sauce. Was a quick and easy meal we had on Cinco De Mayo  :)

Well, let's see ...

My Dieting Salad is boring:  regular iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, croutons and fat free dressing - usually Caesar Italian.  With a scoop of low-fat cottage cheese.

My Regular enjoyable Salad is better:  regular iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, croutons, cheddar cheese shreds, blue cheese chunks, pieces of chicken or turkey breast and regular dressing - my favorites are Ranch or Blue Cheese.  And Regular Cottage Cheese.  Yum!

I hate carrots and peas.

I have to agree that for some reason my salads never taste as good as in a Restaurant!

Geez, can you tell I'm hungry about now?   :lolg:

we do our usual Iceberg lettuace plus a huge bag of mixed lettuaces with shreeded beetroot with whatever we are having for tea (because thats what some of us brits call dinner :p). the other day we decided to have a pasta salad on the side so have the cocnichell pasta and made a sauce with chopped tomatoes, a little bit of olive oil, oregano and.... Chilli flakes, heated it up the blitzed it with the little food processor. it was purely experimental and felt like my mouth was on fire with it just over the pasta... but stuck the sauce over my boring lettuace salad too and it tasted pretty nice.

even better though, added more chopped tomoatoes to it the next day and it made a yummy pasta bake sauce as thankfully adding more tomotoes balanced out the spiceyness hehe

I just love salads as far as I know where they come from, I dont like to eat salads with sauce except if it is home made mayonnaise.

My top 3 :

1) roma salad, bacon, hot red vinegar, onions, parsley
2) roma salad with some balsamic, tomatoes, olive oil and parsley, salt and pepper
3) Corn Salad, white beans, Belgian endives, olive oil, vinegar, parsley and onions

My idea of a salad is one leaf of lettuce, one slice of tomato, and some pickle slices.......

On top of a large hamburger!! :cheers2:

Don't forget the cheese. :rofl1:

That salad sounded so good, I DID Google it!  But sadly there are none in my area.  Closest is NJ and from MA that isn't close!  :madder:

Okay, so now I got curious and Googled as well.  I would have to drive to the City for one of those salads ~ 50 miles away.  Boo!   :(

At Sam's club they sell Newman's organic field greens.  Its a mix of all kinds of good stuff, and worth a try.  Only downside is that container is pretty big, and being organic, it doesn't keep long.   My favorite salad toppings are sunflower seeds, beets, cheese, peas and ranch dressing.  My favorite salad from a restaurant is at Outback and its called Blue Cheese Chop Salad.  It has romaine I think, green onions, crispy rice noodles, roasted cinnamon pecans and blue cheese crumbles.  They chop everything small and its topped with a sweet vinagarette, very yummy combination or tangy, nutty, sweetness.  :thumb:

My favorite salad is Crispers Summer Salad.  It has mixed greens, strawberries, honey cured turkey, mandarin oranges, apples, red onions, crumbled gorgonzola cheese, and sugary pecans.  I get a honey-lime dressing, yum!

My favorite is baby spinach (the European, Mediterranean, and spring mix work well too), raspberries, walnuts, goat cheese crumbles, and a raspberry vinaigrette.
