Title: Does anyone have a Second Life?
Post by: Bellboy on November 16, 2006, 07:27 PM
Well this summer I was bored with VMK and was trying to figure out what the next VMK would be like, so I got a Second Life (http://secondlife.com).
Well with that said, I have no clue what to do in there..  I have logged in a few times since, but am clueless about the whole thing.  It looks really cool, and the options on what you can make/wear seem endless for creative types.
Does anyone here play it?  If so is there a Disney community or group area? And if so again, how the heck do you find it?

I had recently heard of this...dh told me about it. There was an article about it in some magazine. From that, I gather you make a character (most, according to the article look like porn stars  :o) and then you live a life. I don't think there is any part of Disney in there--that's what VMK is for. lol The graphics looked incredible, dh was going to start a character but the program you have to download was so big he gave up. I didn't want to even try...already have enough online addictions thank you. But I think it's similar to VMK...in that it's more fun if you know people...you would have to *cough* look for a board and get to know people (just don't let Decoy catch you!). GL

Dang.....I don't seem to have enough time for the "first life", how in the heck am I supposed to live a second one. :P

You only get one shot at this life, but if you do it right once is enough.

a friend of mine plays it.  Wow, let me tell you, its nothing like vmk. the things you can see and buy...should come with an NC-17 rating at least lol  I tried it on my computer but my graphics card isn't compatible.  She likes it though.  She did say she met someone who was part of a disney group on there and they too played vmk but I dont believe she has seen him since.

I spent some time in Second Life  over the past few days.  I just really can not believe the amount of content in there.  :hypno: I think this is the first official generational gap I have run into (being in my early early early 30s).  If someone had told me that they wanted to start on online virtual world and expected thousands of people to create tons of quality content in it, never mind pay subscription fees to live there; I would have said, neat idea, but the internet/online community is not ready for it.

I really don't understand how there is so much content in there?  You (coolmainstreetgirl) are absolutely right that there is a TON of adult content, but it is labeled really well!  I am amazed at how well the entire place is labeled and mapped.  It's just way too big for me to grasp right now.

A bunch of VMKers found me.  I put vmk as an interest in my profile and voila, they came to me.  They were really cool and showed me around.  As of right now, someone has re-created part of Main St USA from the WDW Magic Kingdom, including a cool castle. Its a really neat project but far from finished.  It's not VMK specific at all. There is probably more Disney fan content in there somewhere.

My advice is to get a tour from someone who knows Second Life well if you are going to give it a try.  It makes all the difference!

Other than being wowed by the thing, I dont really think I will use it much, never mind pay for it.  It is wicked nice not having to dictionary dance. BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT SAFE FOR KIDS!!  I guess there is a teen version that is safer, but not sure how they would pull that off.

Oh and if you do check it out, I recommend the skydiving! Wicked Wicked Cool.

Can't say I do have a Second Life, like papaduck, I have yet to find my first. lol

I'm with Kit, I got enough of an addiction with Vmk; I don't need something else for the hubby to nag at me about.  ::) Hope you do find your place in there BelleBoy, these things are definitely more worth it when you got a nice circle of friends in there.

The "first life" is constantly evolving, but it is the friends that make it fun.

Guess that I'm not cut out to be a hermit, it's just too much fun bein' out in the "real world".

MORE TOYS..... :D

Because of this thread, and having heard of it before, I tried Second Life 3 or 4 days ago. I went in with rather strong preconceived notion about the prevalence of, shall we say, mature content. I've been on for maybe a total of 5 or 6 hours, and thought I'd share some impressions and screenshots.

System requirements: First off, though, Second Life needs a fast computer, fast graphics card, and fast internet connection. Really fast. From an old laptop and a dodgy internet connection, I would go into a complex area, and it would look like a featureless grey plain. Then, 10 seconds later, some gray rectangles and planes would appear. A minute or two later, the textures would load. Ouch. But, from home, with a pretty decent (new) computer and fast internet, I could run it on a 24" wide-screen in full resolution, and it was beautiful. Stunning, actually.

Content: it's like a completely unregulated capitalistic environment, and in our society, sex sells. There's a fair amount of nudity and explicit content, running from R to NC-17. And beyond. And that's what I expected. BUT... what surprised me was that there are huge areas that are just stunningly rendered. Yes, I used stunning already. But, the creative content is awesome. I spent a half an hour this morning wandering through just 2 "blocks" of the State of Caledon, and it's like a perfectly manicured community, much like a cross between Celebration, FL, Main Street USA, chic seaside resorts, fashionable areas of Paris and London, and New England charm. There are art studios where you can purchase art reproductions. There are transparency effects, and stained glass you can see through. Public parks with streaming music and statues. Grottos with waterfalls, flowers, and hanging foliage.

And all of it is in 3D. Not like VMK's "faux" 3D, which consists of a 2D image with a few things to hide behind, but true 3-dimensions. It's an immersive space.

What's impressive is that nearly ALL of it (I'm told, all except trees and some landscape textures) are all created by users. Every person in Second Life, whether a paying member or not, has full access to the development tools: creating 3D objects, texturing them, writing programs / scripts in a C / Java like programming language. All the content can be generated by any user, paying or not. (What you get for becoming a paying member is the ability to own land, and a weekly stipend of game money.) And it's just incredible.

Environmental effects: trees sway with the wind, water ripples, glass can be of various opacity, lighting varies from midnight dark, noon, sunset, sunrise, and all in-between. Light casts glows.

Avatars: body structure is completely customizable; i.e., nose, ears, facial proportions, height, everything. I haven't even touched this yet, but DW spent half an hour recreating her face on an avatar. Or, you can fully customize with wearable objects. A freebie included a metallic dragon with many adornments. Or a stormtrooper. Or a wolf or weird anime furry creature. Or, and there are lots of these, all sorts of variations on porn-star like avatars. Movements use many, many joints. You know dancing on VMK? Pfah! On the newbie help island, you can receive TWENTY-SEVEN different salsa gestures. Each one plays an ~30 second loop of different salsa dance, with movement at the hips, elbows, wrists, everywhere. There's break-dancing, club dancing, once called "Can't dance" (which looks like white-boy dancing, which is still better than me in RL), and most importantly, the chicken dance. I'm sure there are hundreds more.

Anyway, bottom line is that I'm left thinking, what awesome potential showcasing such incredible creativity. And how telling of human nature and our society that in many places, what eventually sells is sex, porn, and casino gambling. (Or even, I have heard, fantasy sex-play with avatars that look like minors. Or animals. Or "other.")

But here are some screen shots of some of the spaces I came across in just a few hours of wandering about. OK, a lot of shots.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_NightClubsm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/NightClubsm.jpg)A night club. You can't really tell, but the floor is made of glass, and there are moving lights and swimming fish under the floor.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_ShoppingParkPlazasm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/ShoppingParkPlazasm.jpg)An outdoor shopping plaza; you can see another store display in the distance. The leaves are nice, and move with the wind.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_BeachReadingsm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/BeachReadingsm.jpg)When you "sit", you can often sit on something called a poseball. "Sitting" at this spot causes you to lie on your belly, kicking your feet every once in a while, while you read a book in a hammock overlooking a beach. Poseballs can do really long and complex animations of avatars. There are lots of "relax" "sit" "cuddle" "kiss" poseballs scattered all over.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_CaledonPortsm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/CaledonPortsm.jpg)I really like what I've seen of this entire community. If you check out Second Life, I'd recommend going straight to Caledon. Takes a LOT of processing / graphics power though.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_CaledonHollidayEstatesm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/CaledonHollidayEstatesm.jpg)Some people do really nice things with their homes. Sure puts VMK rooms to shame.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_CaledonXmasDisplaysm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/CaledonXmasDisplaysm.jpg)A cute Christmas display in Caledon. Outside, they have a reindeer drawn sleigh you can ride.

(http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/th_ArtParksm.jpg) (http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/greenbezoar/ArtParksm.jpg)This was a nice "Arts in the Parks" location. If you sit at the piano, the poseball has your hands moving across the keys, making little nice playing motions. If you click on the sheet music (which you can zoom in on and read, actually), there is live streaming of piano music. There's artwork scattered about in a nice park, with a fountain, and lots of foliage.

Thanks Bezoar,
I was begining to think that I was the only one who thought that SL was incredible.  I am amazed by the AMOUNT of quality content in there.  The "World" is HUGE.

I just don't understand how there can be so much quality user built content in there.  Everyday I find so many new things.
Some of my favorites are
-The model train club's island - with reproductions of many different favorite stations, trains, and environments.  Ride the Orient Express to Grand Central Station, etc
-Many Colleges own islands and their students build art exhibits and INCREDIBLE clothing boutiques.
-The Tree Houses are insane.  They look so real, and there is so many unique ones it blows my mind!
-The games night clubs play, and line dancing.  I never ever thought it would be fun, but it is!
-Get yourself a helicopter and Fly, it is so much fun!  WAY better than flight simulator.

That is only scratching the surface.
It's no VMK, but as online toys go, it is the best of the best!!

It looks gorgeous! If only I had a better computer... *sigh*

The avatar is still too close to default Second Life. All I've done is made it shorter, skinnier, non-blonde, removed its bulging muscles, and taken away its initial skin-tight clothing. It still needs a  more plain / boring looking face, and geeky glasses, and then it will just start to more closely resemble me. There should be a way to make it look more sleep-deprived. Oh, and more preppy / less night-club; need that too.

My aim is to be one of the few clearly unattractive avatars in Second Life... without using the simple expedient of being green.

Well, I found a nice sushi bar in a sim Kyoto...

Then i decided to fly, and i flew up really high and off the map and it disconnected me and said i was out of bounds ::), so i restarted and i ended up in a building...it took me forever to find the door!
oh well i guess some games aren't for some people, this patchy will be off of this game for awhile... lol ;D

I was thinking a little about this, and it totally makes sense, based on how they set up the "economy" of SL. To get in-game money, you either have to fork over REAL money to buy Linden dollars, or you need to have the creative skills to create a cool product in-game and sell it to the first group of people.

Once a cool product is created and sells well, other people with creative ability are going to try to make a better version, to be able to steal away the sales. So, you probably end up in a bit of a one-upmanship scenario, where objects just keep getting better and better, as the creative users vye for the purchasers.

I just wish there were more rewards for people creating "community" spaces, or "cultural" areas.

club penguin is a mainly for little kids, multiplayer internet thing. Your character is a penguin and you can throw snowballs, and play games, and own a small pet thing... you can't buy anything unless you hand over real money first... it's quite cute.

i think one of the VMkids on the dis posted it one day, and i was searching at four in the morning for something to do, and i found that.

You ain't got nuthin' on geeky... I've been spending a significant amount of time not even exploring and certainly not meeting people, but instead sitting on a platform 500 meters in the air, and... writing computer programs ("scripting" in Second Life). On the other hand, I released it for sale a little while ago, and somewhat to my surprise, it's selling. Rather well, in fact -- more than $70 USD so far. Not bad for playing a "free" game, that I don't plan to pay to join as a "premium member."

Ok I was purposely avoiding this thread, but finally could resist no longer and read it through completely last night, which of course led me to creating my own "second life" Pretty amazing game!  I was in the area where you are supposed to learn the basics and all was going well, but somehow I teleported myself to somewhere else, and I was lost after that.  I was pretty impressed though.  I named my character Tigress Jewell (shocking I know)
I would love to find some friendly person to help me out should I decide to brave it again. LOL

So, how do I get back to beginners island or whatever its called?  I need to finish my lessons!

I'm sorry to say Tiger, once you teleport off the island of "Will This Training Tutorial Ever End???", it becomes locked to you and you can't complete it unless you delete your character and start over.

Bummer!  Wonder why do they make you teleport off as part of your tutorial then?  A little warning would have been nice, lol.  I ended up in some Korean place!  I will get it figured out though, its got me so curious now.

No Kidding! Sex really doesn't "sell" with me but I am very curious about this game.  Sounds neat.  Is there a way to play it and just not deal with too much of that part of the game?

They do have areas designated as "PG" rated areas and others as "Mature" within the game.  So if you do, before moving to different areas on the map, you can check out the ratings of the area before deciding on whether to go to them or not.

I haven't even started to try and build anything yet, but had a good laugh changing my characters appearance.  I still feel pretty lost in there though.  :D

I was worried about that, too. Well, I've been in SL a fair amount for the past 2 months, and have managed to avoid all that, because I'm just not interested.

Last weekend, I went to a 2 hour live classical music performance, visited the "Second Louvre" with original art made my other players, explored recreations of New Orleans, Paris, a Japanese village, etc. But mostly, I've done a fairly hefty bit of "scripting", which is writing in the in-game programming language, and have created a product that is actually selling very, very well. (Yeah, it's geeky, but I enjoy it.)

I've only just started getting back to exploring, and really need to do a _tiny_ bit of shopping, so I can get out of my newbie clothes.

In case you're curious what kind of fashion stuff can end up in Second Life, this is the latest issue of one of the fashion magazines. All the pics are from in-game. Some of the images are a little... racy... ;) but others I find quite glamorous and fun: http://www.secondstyle.com/downloads/Second_Style_Issue6.pdf

I think the sex, gambling, etc. get a lot of the press, but it's easy enough to avoid if you're not interested. And, easy enough to find, if you want to as well. Just like in a real-life city :)

I'm NOT using "Bezoar" as my avatar in Second Life, btw. If you're wondering, it is precisely because SL has a part of the population and a public perception of being a bit too "adult" in nature, and I didn't really want people in SL to be able to track back to me in RL. But if you join SL and want to find me, just drop me a note here :) I just ask that you don't tell other people in SL who I am (like, I live in Boston, work in a particular very specific medical specialty, etc., which is enough to fully identify me in real life.)

Clothes? Check out the link I posted a page back from a SL Fashion Magazine... And there is SERIOUS shopping to be done in SL... a pity I'm not much of a shopper. And tens of thousands of freebie items too. For newbie / freebie stuff, try:
- Free Dove

- Sarah's Freebie Paradise

Cool -- I'd like to see the dragon. I was thinking of learning how to write scripts that do following / sensing and whatnot.

Regarding Mickey Ears -- great minds think alike! I was not in SL for more than 2 days, before I tried my hand at making Mickey Ears, and learned quickly that I am NOT a builder / texture artist. What I did was take a picture of my black ears at home, uploaded it as a texture, and then built the bare bones of a Mickey hat: hat made from a hollowed out half sphere, and each ear as a end-slice of hollowed out spheres. Then I tried to apply the texture.

It looked awful :) Either my hair stuck THROUGH it (I didn't know about invisiprims then, or removing hair, before wearing hats), or I had to resize it so big that it looked like I had a giant inverted black bowl on my head. Nobody in their right mind would be caught dead wearing it.. That's about when I turned to scripting.

Actually, what could be kind of entertaining would be to re-create VMK magic pins in SL... Easy enough to do Inferno, Teleport, Fireworks... And they are just vague enough, that I don't think Disney could try to sue for copyright infringement ;)

I've been to all but one of those and just a heads up, especially on Sarah's.  Be careful if your kids are around, there are some naked avatar pictures on the walls, and some of the clothing is past PG rating. Not everything is adultish though, and its definetly worth visiting! If your doing a search you will need to allow mature content to be searched or you won't find the places.

Nope, no free land. In order to "own" land, you need to be a "Premium" (i.e., "paying") member. But, if you can acquire enough game money (Lindens, L$), you could rent land from someone.

There are places called "sandboxes" where you can go and build things -- if you do that, you're best off working on a platform high in the air, so that "griefers" don't bother you. (Think of them as kind of like the annoying people in VMK who go around saying "ur ugly", but now armed with scripts that can "orbit" you, spam you, etc.)

I was a "Basic" (non-paying) member... until today... Like you, I told myself there's no way I would put my own money into the game. But, then I created a product, started selling it about 2 weeks ago, and it sold well enough to get me enough L$ to cash out into USD, which I then used to pay for a "Premium" account today. So, I'm not sure if I broke my promise to myself, about not putting "real money" into the game, since my earned "game money" could have been converted to cash.

Find any cool places yet? I need to go exploring more.

Hmm, what is this scripting? If I can use virtual money to turn into real money to then turn into virtual money, there is really no money involved! :D

LOL Places? I am still fixated on my appearance!  ;D

Hmm, what is this scripting? If I can use virtual money to turn into real money to then turn into virtual money, there is really no money involved! :D

Scripting is programming in the "Linden Scripting Language" (LSL), which they claim is a C++ / Java-style programming language (I wouldn't know, because I can't program either of those -- LSL is my first exposure to event-driven programming.) Basically, everything in SL that does something when you interact with it, happens because a scripter wrote a program to tell it what to do. Scripts are what make Jewel's dragon follow her around, or make doors open when you click on them, or control the poses / animations that happen when you sit on certain things. The LSL on-line resources are a little bit in flux now, but here's the most comprehensive resource for now: http://rpgstats.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

It's kind of difficult to write a script that does something that anyone will be willing to pay for. But it is possible -- I've done very well.

Other ways to make L$, depending on your skills:
- building: using the fundamental building blocks of SL to build objects (houses, vehicles, clothing attachments, jewelry)
- texturing: if you're good with Photoshop / GIMP / Paintshop, anything that is built, needs to be textured; the "skin" and non-attached (painted-on) clothing that people make is also done with textures

You can actually get "hired" to do things in SL, but that starts to feel like work, unless you enjoy it. But, there are bouncers, receptionists, administrative assistants, sales people, models, escorts, whatever.

Unskilled methods to make L$:
- "camp chairs": there are places that will pay you to just sit in a chair. Why would they do that? Because you will artificially boost their "traffic" numbers, and increase their visibility in search lists. The typical pay rates are L$2 or L$3 every 10 minutes... Given that the exchange rate is L$260 - 270 per $1 USD, I'm not sure this would pay for the electricity of keeping you computer on while camping.

That being said, in the first month or month and a half, I accumulated several thousand L$ by camping, leaving the computer on overnight, or when going to work, or while I was writing scripts. Then again, I didn't buy much of anything.

You're probably better off just spending a few dollars: $5 USD would get you L$ 1,300, which would otherwise take you 100+ hours of continuous camping...

Oh, and paying members get a weekly stipend. People who joined earlier would get L$500 a week, then a few months ago they dropped it to L$400 a week, and as of November, now down to L$300 a week. It's a bit of a bummer, because if an annual membership is $72 USD a year, the people in the top stipend level were getting paid to play: L$500/week x 52 wks/year = L$ 26,000 / year = $100 USD a year of stipend, for paying an annual membership fee of $72 USD a year. Lucky them!

(You can cash out your L$ for USD, or vice versa, on one of several currency exchanges, that work like the real stock market, including limit buy and sell orders.)

TOO MUCH INFO, lol.

Just enjoy the freebie stuff -- there's enough of it to keep you plenty entertained.

I feel like such a newbie, I have tons of questions but will keep to a minimum since I really can't take so much new information. I did what I could and practically finished the whole tutorial. The only thing that is really bugging me right now is that I can't seem to finish the tutorial on how to move. I do the driving part, I do the running over the rat part and I do the flying part but I'm still missing a star. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? And after all is completed does it tell you what to do next or you're left to yourself to find out?

Second, I came with a default hair, I already went through the whole thing on how to change it. Problem is I can't seem to get rid of the hair I have, I'm only adding to it? When I right click on that hair it does not give me the option to remove or take off, when I create a new one it only adds to it the current one. Any ideas on what I should do?

I considered myself to adapt pretty well but I'm having trouble with a few things. I did even manage to help a few people that spoke spanish, if anything it's going to help me brush up on my writing. hehe Other than that, I'm still a bit lost. Help?  ::)

Ok, from one noob to another.. I'll do the best I can.

I never finished the tutorial.  I ended up teleporting somewhere else, and once you leave that tutorial island you can never go back, so I'm told, lol.  So, if you're determined to finish I don't know what to tell you.  But if you're just sick of it either move from the movement section to another tutorial section or just leave that place completely!

On the hair thing you need to start with a bald base, then add a style.  My advice is to visit some freebie places for new hair once you get past your tuts.  The styles all come with a bald base, then you put on the style over that.  Even the free newbie hair is better than what comes with your avatar to start with.  The picture I posted is hair I managed to somewhat create, but its not very good, I'll be looking for more.

Do you want to send me or tell me your avatar name?  I can invite you to our group of 3, lol.  Of course, now we have a member who can own land (not to mention write cool scripts)!  I think I'll be upgrading Be's status in the group, that is if I can figure it out. ROFL

Have you left the tutorial area?  If not, the easiest thing to do is to click on the sign post in that area towards the right. It is a reset sign. I had to do this several times. I am thinking it was a bug of some sort. Once you reset, head towards the red target area in the center of the path. You should get a star after this. From there I am not sure what I did lol. I just kind of teleported to a welcome island of some sort and then teleported out of there accidently!  ;D

Here's something about clothing / hair that didn't make sense to me for a while:

- clothing and hair can either be generated from the Appearances options (using the sliders as well as uploading textures), or, COMPLETELY separate from the Appeances slides, by actually ATTACHING it to the outside of your avatar's body, on one of dozens of pre-set attachment points. These attachments are made of "primitives" (the building blocks of all objects), and so are often called "prim hair" or "prim skirts". Fancy (and expensive) clothing and hair tends to be "prim"-attachment-based. Freebies tend to be via the appearances menu.

So, sometimes it looks like you are wearing two overlapping hairs. That's probably because you have one set in the Appearances menu, and one set as an attachment, OR both as attachments.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Be, that is good information to know. When I had those little poms poms in my hair, I had no idea it was not actually hair, that's why I had such a difficult time removing it. By mistake I right clicked on those attachments and was able to remove them. Phew! That such a pain in the booty.

I'm still looking around, trying to figure out how to earn money. It looks like I'm a spender real life and virtually. I see a pair of shoes that are about L400 and I want them bad. lol

Anyways, I went around yesterday checking out the shops and whatnot, I began to see how incredibly talented these people are with their creations. I am at a lost for words when I see all the work that goes into each and every one. Maybe one day I will also get to create some designs myself. Be, to design hair, makeup, clothes and all those goodies; do you need to know scripting? Any help in that area would be great. Also, when you upload patterns do you need to pay for that?

Thanks for all the help and the new addiction.  :P

The vast, vast majority of creators in SL have no idea how to script. It's one of the reasons I got drawn to it -- I have just about NO artistic ability, and VERY poor skills in Photoshop, so it seemed unlikely I'd ever make a (second) living doing clothing design / texture work. So don't worry -- scripting is not at all necessary.

Yes, uploading a texture costs L$10 (I remember the first time I uploaded Mickey ear textures, camping for about an hour to get it, lol). On the plus side, you can "preview" your clothing with the texture, prior to uploading it, which can save you some upload fees.

If you are good with Photoshop / Paintshop Pro / GIMP (which is free), you might be all set. You could either make your OWN clothes, or even be able to sell it. (Though, getting a store up is difficult.) If you want to try to make your own clothes, this is a great blog: http://slnatalia.blogspot.com. She has some newbie tips, but better yet, goes into quite some detail (more in the earlier blog entries, than more recently) about how she designs clothes. She also uses this absolutely fabulous scripted tool written by a complete loser geek guy to help design skirts ;)

I have a 2yo and a 4yo. That means -- NO, I don't have a first life anymore. ;)

My only hope for a substitute was to try to have a second life.

Of course, that hasn't worked either -- as I sit by myself on a platform, writing computer programs.

After reading all of this, and being a total non techie, I can't help but wonder.......

Does anyone have a first life anymore???

Please excuse the observations of a semi-illiterate, (that does not mean I don't understand trucks!) "ancient duck". :notme:

I just like to stir things up now and then.

And I, unfortuantely have no life at all, I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old ( which at one point they were 5 and 2 which equals . . .   ;D

Hmm, I am okay at editing photos on the computer just never tried original textures. I wonder if I could try my hand at it?

Woot! Four of us were on at the same time! That was really fun, even though Be tried to run me over with his Bumper car, then pushed my car clear out of the ring!!  :o   Thanks for taking us to Phat Cats Be, its a great place!  I invited Pirate to our group too.  I'm beginning to wonder if I should change the group name to Beauties and the Geek?  Seriously, I can change it to anything at all if we want to brainstorm on it.

So when will my new hair be delivered?  ::)

Lies, all lies. Plus, there were no witnesses.

Name of the group would be fine by me, but where's Bellboy?

Watch out Jewel.. for real!!

Remember way back when VMK came out with that poor dead bear (rug)?  Mal had the first screen print of it, with an abandoned Herbie (couch) next to it.   I recall all too well, that it was Be who admitted driving his Herbie and he recalled hearing a thump!  He was on his way to the JC to see if his Herbie would float, and was too anxious to get there.

Personally I suggested to him he was hunting for a bear rug.. and well.. he might well now be looking for a tig(g)er rug!!  :hypno:  Hey, if he could use a Herbie couch for the bear.. no telling what he could do with a bumper car!

Please heed the warning girl friend!!  :grouphug:

(Please pardon this temporary interruption of VMK, into the SL sub board! But Be has many, many fine talents.. and maybe just one little vice?  >:D )  Ya know I heart ya Be!

I have a 2yo and a 4yo. That means -- NO, I don't have a first life anymore. ;)

My only hope for a substitute was to try to have a second life.

Of course, that hasn't worked either -- as I sit by myself on a platform, writing computer programs.

 Totally.  I'm freakin lucky to have a second life once or twice a month.
Too funny. My two tikes are 3 and 5, and I am realizing they left the "May experience sudden loss of that thing called A Life." part out of the manual/wedding vows.  I say they replace the "Obey your husband" part with said disclaimer since that part of the ceremony doesn't seem to apply anymore lol.

That's an incredible castle. You had mentioned a while ago finding people who were trying to recreate Main Street -- it doesn't come up in obvious Searches, and, frankly, I'd be surprised if the Disney Co. didn't clamp down on them if they tried to recreate it too faithfully. I kind of think that any recreation of Disney parks would need to be private / not-publicly accessible, or risk getting shut down for copyright violation, which is really too bad.

okay - i have been so afraid to post on this thread because I just know I am going to get ANOTHER addiction.

I heard about A Second Life about a month ago.  I set up an account and wandered my way through the n00b area.  I am SOOOO afraid to leave that area because I dont quite get what to "do" in Second Life.

Also, I am VERY confused about the money part.  I have read / heard a lot and understand that people make real money from Second Life.  This would be great!  However, I don't really "get it."  Okay, not a dumbo here, just a bit confused.

Anyone patient enough to take me under their virtual wing and "un-confuse" me?

Anyone patient enough to take me under their virtual wing and "un-confuse" me?

I still can't fathom how much there is in there.  I was lucky enough to get some help and good direction from someone I met my first time in.  I would be more than happy to pass it on, and so on.

The best way to get oriented, get around, and get some really cool free stuff is to join the Lucky Chairs groups.  Lucky chairs give away things to people who have a last name begining with a certain letter.  The chairs pick a random letter every 15 minutes or when someone wins the prize.  The lucky chairs group members spread out all over SL and monitor these chairs, and pass links to the chairs and the letters they are looking for.  They are really cool people, and are a lot of fun to chase!  When you see someone say " L @ SL_LINK" it means that they found a chair and it is looking for someone who's last name begins with L.  If your letter comes up, click the link in the IM window, and then sit in the chair.  Its that simple.  You will get really cool stuff for free!

Earning munny is really easy too.  Casinos and stores all over SL have various "camping chairs" that pay you for just sitting there.  It sounds too good to be true, but it actually helps the land/shop owner to get bettter traffic ratings, hence be rated better in the Search engine.  I seem to make the best money in the chairs that have bonuses if you play the slot machines in front of them.  I let my avatar sit in a chair all night while I sleep and he usually pulls $200 a night.  Get yourself a mule or two etc.  Finding these chairs can be tough at times, but when you find one simply landmark it and go back to it.  I have a ton I could share with you.  Use the search for places tab, type camping, or join the camper chairs club.

Thats a good start. I will post more when I get time.  Let me know how you all fair, and the tricks/fun you find.

Also, I am VERY confused about the money part.  I have read / heard a lot and understand that people make real money from Second Life.  This would be great!  However, I don't really "get it."

Although there is "game currency" (Lindens = L$), they actually have "real money" worth. The bottom line is that there is no way to get L$ except by doing something that has real "worth" to someone. I.e., there are no NPC's that you visit for credits and few games that you play to get L$.

The people who _really_ make a lot of money do it by somehow creating a product or a service that other people are actually willing to pay for. Examples are making really beautiful clothing, that others are actually willing to spend the equivalent of 50 cents or a dollar to acquire, in the virtuall world. Or creating a "gadget" that is useful or fun.

As a newbie, who likely doesn't know how to "create" things of worth to others yet, your contribution to others is by merely being a presence on their property, because that boosts their "traffic" rating, and makes their shop, or whatever, show up higher in the search ratings. That's why there are "camp chairs" and "lucky chairs" -- they pay you to just be there, because they will benefit from the higher traffic.

In the long run, camping and lucky chairs got rather dull (for me anyway), so I started looking for ways to create things, which I happen to find fun. But you can get plenty far with freebie items.

I'll try to find links to threads about making money. At least one excellent one is in the forums for SL, which you need to log in as your SL character in order to read.

How do you leave your avatar in a camp chair without being disconnected for inactivity?  Also, what about if my computer goes into sleep mode?  If I could find a decent camp spot I'd like to try leaving it all night just to see how much I could get.

This tip should be posted on billboards all over SL.

Once in SL, press "CTRL+ALT+D" to enable your "CLIENT MENUS" http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=339 (http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=339)
This feature gives you two more menus on the top bar.
In the Client menu, select Character > Character Tests > Enable AFK
Toggling this option is all you need to do. And you will never have to do it again.

Dont listen to the people who say you need a script to keep you active.

NOTE that is not CTRL+ALT+DEL, its "CTRL+ALT+D".

It totally grows old.  But as a newbie it was a lot of fun and got me really acclimated to SL. And I got my wife a ton of clothes for her avatar!

The camping chairs become addictive in a strange way, it makes you almost feel bad for getting up to go look around.   You feel like you are loosing money by not sitting in a chair.

I often have to remind myself that this is fake money to buy fake things, that I probably wont even care about in a day or two... lol

The first SL Millionaire was probably referring to Anshe Chung, a Land Baron(ness). She is the single biggest land broker in SL, and has reportedly made more than $1M USD in the business.

And what, pray tell, is keeping you back from SL? ;)

;D Be!  You just don't want to give up on us, do you? (When you bought into the game, are you getting some kind of percentage out of those of us that sign up?)   ;)  You keep trying to get me.  Now you are after Kit.  ;D

I tell you, the more I read here I know I am not 'geeky' enough, nor 'artsy' enough.  I have yet to "follow" any of your threads where you describe how to do something. No insult meant, just I "don't get it".

I think the only way, would be if someone could tell me there was a reason to be there (for not being able to script or design), AND, I would probably need someone like Bellboy to guide the uninitiated duck (as he has offered for Dreams).

So, how about my first issue?  Can any of you SLers tell me what is there to do if you don't script or design, other than looking around?

Please pardon, while I respond in the utmost in cynicism -- I mean the following (mostly) tongue-in-cheek. Remember that like everyone else here, I once spent every free moment I could, hanging out in VMK, to be with friends.

What do you do on VMK?

Chat. With a dictionary that makes a mockery of the word.

Socialize. With a white glove hanging over your head, if you were to reveal anything of substance about yourself.

Buy clothes and items. That look like bad cartoons, and that everyone else has identical copies of.

Collect rare items. That are given only to those obstinate enough to make it through an enormously enjoyable queue process.

Go to events. That you have no control over and frequently can not enter in the first place.

Admire the rooms. All several dozen of them. In a flat 2-dimensional world. That you can't interact with.

Experience the Disney magic. In a system that cares little for fairness, or the feelings of the people who play.

Contribute, in the end, almost nothing to how the world takes shape, and how others interact with it.

=====

Why was I trying to get any of you to join? Well, what was missing most of all for me from SL over the first two months there was any sense of community that I was connected to. Like jumping into a huge intimidating city in the real world where you had no friends, SL can be a vastly lonely place to be. With time, I'm starting to meet a few people, to say hi to and chat with. In my own small way, I'm also making a mark in the world, having created something that some people have told me is really great. Of course, it'd be even more fun if more of YOU folks were there, but I understand that the majority of people wont' "get SL", just like the majority of people don't "get" VMK.

Duck, haven't you ever tried to explain what's special about VMK to people who don't understand?

Well, mainly the fact that I get quite addicted to online stuff, lol. And the problem is that I don't have enough time for the online addictions I already have! I admit though, I'm really close to jumping in!

p.s. Yes that was the name of the SL millionaire. :)

Yes Be, I have told others of VMK.

I guess as I just explained to Kit, that despite all the troubles that VMK has.. for me it is a "Disney fix", albeit virtual.  I haven't been able to go to the parks for 10 years now.  I need that "fix".  It also doesn't grow old, as when I make new friends, it appears "fresh" again.  Seeing it through their eyes.

Yes, I understand your seeking established friends, and I appreciate your considering me one of them.  Please know it is that friendship that allowed me to poke fun at you trying to get us to join!  :notme:

It's not so much that I don't get SL.. if anything I feel quite the opposite.  That is why I was seeking knowledge of what someone that "cannot contribute to it in the script/design areas" did other than looking around.  :lost: I am hoping to find that there are things that I could "do on my own" so that I would not be dependent upon others "all the time" I was on SL.  (If that makes any sense?)

Oh, I totally understand now -- and sorry if I came across as defensive -- I'm sure I was.

So true, about VMK being a great Disney fix. You've probably heard me lament repeatedly, if ONLY Disney could generate an online presence at SL, which they can't because the public backlash would be terrible. That would be perfect -- we could get our Disney Fix, and still have a less restrictive, more creative environment. But, if you are looking for the Disney fix, you're unlikely to get anything of the sort at SL, unless you (we) create it ourselves. :(

On the other hand, I do seem to recall that you keep LATE hours. One nice thing is that SL is 24 hours a day, so perhaps it could be a place to chat with VMK friends after hours?  I've run across one or both of them at ~5 to 6am EST now, which was very nice. And, as Jewel and Fan have found, freebies abound in SL. I think Fan mentioned having accumulated 13,000 items already. I thought I was bad at ~11,000.

Plus, I'd do my best to find you a nice duck avatar, that I could tint purple.

OK, anyone care to hear the tales of my first hour and half or so on SL? I tell you, it can only happen to me...

First off, I don't like the avatar I picked out, but it had said you can change it later, so I go to the appearance tutorial section first. Eager to make some changes that is what I start to do. But some how, I end up nearly naked. I am standing in this castle with nothing but my knickers on! ...and no clue how to put clothes back on. sigh. And people are walking all around me taking a good long look at my, ahem, very large boobs.  :hypno:

So I stand there, almost naked, changing my appearance, amused by the fact that I can change the perkiness and cleavage of my boobs. I did downsize a little. And I did figure out how to make some clothes thankfully.

Then I got to the hair. Now, my original avatar had this weird, black, Princess Leia crazy hair. Well, I wanted blonde hair of course. I didn't realize that I had to *take off* the Princess Leia hair, so I had this stupid looking two tone (black and blonde) hair. I looked like a total freak. Eventually, I found the "take off freaky Princess Leia hair" command, but not before I took my snapshot.  ::)

Then I went over to Help Island. Lord knows I needed all the help I could get. I'm wandering around and this male avatar comes up to me and grabs my boobs, that perv!  :amazed: He must hang out there and wait for all the well endowed newbies to come by. Well, I got out of there right quick.

I ended up on some other island. I went into this temple. It was very pretty and serene. No one else was there. There was this couch thingy with all these pillows, so I thought, hmm...wonder if I can sit there. So I did. Then I couldn't get up. The "stand up" button wouldn't work. I tried everything. Then I saw that I was in the "Temple of Fallen Souls" or something like that. Oh GREAT! What does that mean? I'm a sitting duck...for some other perv to come over and take advantage of me on this couch!!!!  :lost: I'm still stuck there. I'm hoping I can figure out how to get up when I log back on.

So there you have it...I'm an unattractive, well endowed avatar who has been manhandled and is stuck in a love temple on a couch and doesn't know how to get up. HELP!!!!

Wow, Kit, sounds like you're...

... doing better than most newbies!

Don't worry, you (probably) won't be stuck on the Couch of Love when you next login. Incidentally, that reminds me of some other classic newbie moves (other than the most frequent wear the BOX of clothing on your head, instead of the removing the clothing from the box first, and then wearing it): if you use a "Dance Machine" to activate a cool set of dance moves, do NOT teleport out of the area before stopping your dancing, or else you will be trapped in the Dance Loop of Eternity. Even while sitting. And walking. And flying.

And don't teleport while sitting either (remember to Stand Up first), or when you get to the other end, you'll be stuck in the sit position, while moving around, waddling around, much like a strange... duck. ;)

And yes, I still do all these things.

Edited to add:
After confirming that Kit was both detached from her Couch of Love, and umm, "decent", I had the pleasure of meeting her briefly in SL. Apparently, her adventures with clothing (or lack thereof) have inspired her to perhaps overcompensate. I am too nice a person to post screenshots (OK, I was laughing so hard I forgot to take any), but suffice it to say that Her Royal Highness Kit looks quite dashing...

...wearing chainmail?

There are also sunbathing towels that act like camp chairs and pay you every 10 mins or so that you sunbathe on them.  Your avatar lays down on them and turns every few seconds.  Thats another one of those things that if you use them, be sure to stand up before teleporting.  Yes I did it, but I thought it was really funny that my avatar would get up and walk, then lay back down again once I released the arrow key.  She also was levitating all over the room, all in all, it was pretty entertaining.

I don't have near the free stuff that y'all have accumulated yet, but.. I did want to say that in one of the boxes I got there was a Duck Pond  ;D  Honestly, I am not making this up!

Back to work for me. :(

BTW, Like be please don't refer to me as Fan in public chat or vice versa refer to my name in their over here. Still the shy and private person that I am despite my outfits in SL! :)
Just pm me for my name to find me. Have fun all, hope others join. I may be first to buy land for us to hang out in.
We will see.

Be, how do you check IM offline. Is it in the secondlife online account somewhere?

Under Preferences (I think) you can choose to have offline IM sent to your email account. After that happens, for the next couple of days, you can actually reply by email and have your reply IM'd to the person in SL. It doesn't work after a few days, though.

With a permanent place to keep an object, though, I'm pretty sure I could write a script that would accept and forward emails / IM to people.

If you get land, I can chip in for 512 square meters or more, if you are interested. You probably want at LEAST 1024 sq m, because with 512 you only have ~117 prims to build with, which is not enough for any kind of house + furnishing. And if you own land, I'd love to play around with figuring out how to stream audio / video into the land parcel -- can you say Disney theme park music and background loops? Maybe even ride videos? :)

For those that may be trying to get on this morning... (taken from SL Blog)

We are planning on performing maintenance work in the regular weekly slot of 7:00 AM PDT to 9:00 AM PDT tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb 21st, 2007. Second Life will be unavailable during this period.

If we're going to do land.. I just might have to chip in too.  I was in a little zoo yesterday and I kept thinking jungle cruise.  :D  Roll up.. roll up...  ;D

There are a few things to be aware of, regarding land:

Or, of course, we could just go out and "buy" a private island. Only $1700 USD startup fee, and $300 USD / month afterwards!

(But more likely, I'm just going to continue to hang out in free public sandboxes...)

That kind of stinks.  I would assume the rental prices will go sky high now too.  Sounds best to just hold out until they make more land available.  And, wow, Islands are expensive!!  The people who already own islands.. are they or did they pay that much too?

I'm pretty sure they paid less -- I think there was a price increase a month or two ago.

I've been wondering why the usual suspects have not been on much, and why most of my friends list is not online.  Is this Second Life the reason why?

If so, is this yet another addiction I have to look forward to?

okay, okay, so here it is...

Heard about 2nd Life long before this thread started from a friend of a friend.  I know at some point REAL money is involved and sort of scared to go there (and get taken!).

Made an account, played around a bit in the "training area" and felt a bit clueless.  Have not gone back.

Then this thread popped up.  Would honestly LOVE to get in and figure it out but would feel so much better if someone I felt some sort of connection / trust with was in there with me.

Anyone at all willing to help me find my footing?  Just in the beginning?  I really want to play - and now many of you are there and it's more tempting - but hesitant to go where I have never gone before in the virtual world.

Thanks,
Dreams (staring at the brand new shiny bike with red streamers from the handle bars thinking, I really really really want to - but what if I fall?)

I don't think that you have to ever fork over real money to enjoy this game, but I agree it can be very overwhelming! The great thing is that we have your group "Yensid Wanderers" and we pretty much keep a group chat window going anytime anyone is on.  You just need to join our group, or tell us your SL name and we can send you an invite to the group.  Then  you'll have your own support group which includes a few veterans!

Ok, after so many of you seem to like this, I decided to give it shot yesterday for the first time. I made it all the way through the tutorials, but somehow managed to teleport out of it during the search tutorial. Now I am stuck because I can't get back to finish it :(. I joined the yensid wanderers group, but nobody was on while I was.

Now this place that I teleported to was a help area because it gave hints on how to do things like pick up objects and move them onto tables. I was in this area for about two minutes and some guy jumped on my shoulders and started doing some very obscene things to my face. After that experience I logged off and went onto vmk instead. Is second life always like that?

Oh no Jazz.. I have never had any obscene things done to my face!  So sorry that happened to you.  I didn't look at the group list for new members but I'll do it this morning, and make sure I add you to my friends list.  I'm sure the others will too.  Sounds like somebody might need a makeover too!  :welcome:

Is second life always like that?
Sorry you had that experience, but I would say it's really not all that uncommon.

There will always be people out there whose sole goal is to cause trouble, to try to irritate people, who just get a kick out of being a**es. They are common enough, that there's even a term for them, in SL: "Griefers"

Also, unfortunately, they know that the people who they are MOST likely to get upset are new players, and so they tend to go to places where new players are. Experienced players know better, and effectively emasculate them, by ignoring them. It takes away all of their "fun", to be ignored. Playing into their tactics only encourages them.

Again, sorry your introduction was like that. But I won't say it was unusual or even unexpected. So it'll be up to you whether you'll ever try looking again in SL. If you do, I'd suggest timing it when someone you knew and trusted from here was on, to help show you around? Hopefully, you'll have a better experience that way.

Edited to add: was looking the SL forums after I posted, and there's a thread by a newbie, asking what a Griefer was, with 27 replies. A few excerpts from the first replies:
Quote
Griefer: Someone who enjoys ruining everyone else's fun, while drawing attention to himself/herself. Usually adolescent males with no life and even less moral fibre.

The morons who run around SL caging, shooting or orbiting innocent bystanders are the most readily visible form of griefer. But anyone who intentionallyy sets out to ruin other people's fun, usually while trying to draw attention to themselves, also fits the mold. So a person who buys the parcel next to your nicely landscaped home and fills it with flaming phallic symbols and blaring music is a griefer, as is the guy that intentionally dumps prim garbage on your land, or owrse yet, builds stuff on his land next to yours in a way that it intentionally pushes over into your space.
Quote
Yes, that was a griefer you encountered. Basically a griefer is anyone intentionally behaving in a disruptive way as to interrupt one's game experience. From caging to push weapons to simply stalking someone to verbally harrass them.
Quote
Here are two griefers I ran into as a newbie. I was several days old and I decided to return to orientation island as i thought i had missed some of the lessons. There was a griefer in a sort of a darth vader get-up who told me I was ugly and jumped around in my personal space. There he was at orientation island being mean to newbies like me who didn't know what end was up and hadn't yet put together a good looking avatar.

My motto: Don't give in to griefers.

So - anyone want to guess why I was up until 4am and am tired this morning?

Yep - last night I decided it was time to stop "maybe" being in Second Life.  I posted here previously that I created a Second Life character long ago but never did much with her because I could not figure it out.  Well - last night was my night.

There is someone in a chat group that I am active in that does quite a bit in Second Life.  He was on IM last night so I asked him if he had a little time to help me a bit.  We met up in Second Life and he helped me with the basics We started talking about land and renting and a home and that's when my head started to spin.  I decided if I didn't sign off I was going to face plant on the keyboard.  haha

I found a few of you and sent you messages.  I joined Yensid Wanderers too.  No one was on, but hopefully I can hook up with all of you soon and join in the fun.

By the way - my friend from my chat group loves creating stuff.  He wants me to "think about what you want to look like."  Yep, I am very basic at the moment.  I warned him that it would probably be Disney related and he told me he loves Disney.  Cool!

And oh the things he showed me - so so not PG-13.  :D

Cant wait to find all of you!  Do you have a set meeting time - or just happen into each other?

More and more often, I'm finding _somebody_ from VMKnoBS on, no matter when I log in, which is nice. But, for me and my erratic schedule, I'm just happening into them.

Fuego! is a silly attachment in one of the freebie boxes. When you have it attached, and ANYBODY says "Fuego!", your avatar lets out a scream, and bursts into flame. A real party trick ;)

If it's full-mod (I haven't checked), I could re-script it to remove the scream, and add in a dance loop. Oh, and make it only respond to your command, so not anybody can force you to burst into dancing flames ;)

So whats your favorite things about SL?

What do you think Disney could learn from SL?

It's funny, over the past two years I have met/interacted with many of you from the DIS and VMK, yet in the last two months, I have learned so much more about each of you.  Thanks!!

There's a free FULL permission animation called "FIRE!" which people normally use as an animation for bonfires.

I found that it can be attached to your avatar, who then wanders around completely consumed in flames.

I like it :)

I'm going to be rather scarce in SL for the next couple of weeks, I'd also love to meet the all the new people. Feel free to let people know who I am, "over there" :) And, is there a decent collection of "getting started tips" that people can post?

===============

Pardon the advertisement, but some people might consider this a decent opportunity: if anybody is interested in land for rent, some of the other VMKnoBS regulars who are in SL would likely be able to point you to something you might be interested in.

Parcels are in an unthemed mainland sim with covenant to reduce BS (much like these boards):

2,048 sq m = $15/month
3,072 sq m = $20/month
4,096 sq m = $25/month
(all paid weekly, in L$)

We also are unable to use the group chat.

So while we could log in, there are still problems.
