Mystery - Anyone Know What This is?

Hi all!  I was in a trade room the other day and couldn't figure out what those things were sandwiched in between the brick and on top of the brick.  I tried asking, but nobody would answer... sigh.

Anyone know?  I'm probably being really dense here... but I can't figure it out, LOL.

Pink, those bricks are Christmas fireplaces. They are turned around. Hope that helps!
