You can also drag the items you collect to different spots in the pouch if you want. May not ever need to but you can. I did that with the maples leaves moved them to the first spot since I couldn't donate them at the time and just saved up to the max 99. From what I understand anything over 99 is automatically donated however if it doesn't go to a badge it is lost then. When the badge came back then I donated them.
