This race, traditionally held in February, is the largest, most prestigious event in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and has been won by such racing icons as Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. The current form of the 200 lap, 500 mile event around the superspeedway continues a tradition that started in 1959, but the history of the race goes back another half century. Originally, shorter races were held at Daytona Beach, which evolved into the race that fans from all over the world flock to see today.
